Christmas is coming

Experience the nativity scene live

Christmas Island at  Postmichel Square

Lovingly decorated huts offer Christmas specialities and traditional crafts. The smell of roasted almonds and delicious mulled wine is simply enticing: this is how you like to get into the Christmas spirit. For the young visitors there is a wish list mailbox, from which all wishes are forwarded directly to the office of the Christ Child. The highlight every year is the living nativity scene with sheep, lambs and a donkey. All are peacefully nibbling on a bale of straw. It could have been like this or something similar back in Bethlehem.

The living nativity scene

It has been an integral part of the Esslingen Medieval Market & Christmas Market for many years: the living nativity scene. Sheep, some newborn lambs and a donkey move into their stable at the Postmichel Fountain at the beginning of the Market. Together with the life-size nativity figures of Mary and Joseph, they give the children a real Christmas feeling. And at home, the Christmas story is told once again.

What was once started by St. Francis of Assisi for the first time in the year 1223 with a representation of the Christmas miracle in a cave near Rome, has now become a worldwide nativity scene movement.
