We take students on an approximately one-hour journey back in time to the Middle Ages in the former Free Imperial City of Esslingen am Neckar.
The majority of citizens were craftsmen. Depending on the type of craft, they were held in greater or lesser esteem. Goldsmiths and furriers were well off. Their profession was valued, and their influence was correspondingly high. At the bottom of the social ladder, on the other hand, were the linen weavers. Historical sources show that there were 178 winegrowers in Esslingen in the 14th century. This is hardly surprising, as viticulture was an important economic sector. The wine trade flourished and the city prospered.
