Medieval experience and the inhabitants of an Old Town
What was life like for an urban citizen and how did they earn their living? The guided tour “Life in the Middle Ages” focuses on the living conditions and working environment of the citizens of Esslingen.
The majority of citizens were craftsmen. Depending on the type of craft, they were more or less highly regarded. Goldsmiths and furriers had it good. Their trade was valued and their influence was correspondingly high. Linen weavers, on the other hand, were at the bottom. Historical sources show that there were 178 winegrowers in Esslingen in the 14th century. This is hardly surprising, as viticulture was an important branch of the economy. The wine trade flourished and the town prospered.
